Climate, Ceiling & Insulation Factors

The four adjustments that move your BTU number up or down.

The base rule is 20 BTU per square foot, but four real-world factors shift the final number. This page explains each one and the exact multiplier the calculator applies.

Climate zone (1–5)

Hotter regions need more cooling per square foot. The calculator multiplies by 1.10 in zone 1 (hottest), 1.05 in zone 2, 1.00 in zone 3, 0.95 in zone 4 and 0.90 in zone 5 (coolest). If you are unsure of your IECC zone, a hot southern climate is a higher number and a cool northern one is lower.

Ceiling height

A standard room is 8 ft. Taller ceilings hold more air to cool, so for every foot above 8 the load scales by ceilingHeight ÷ 8. A 10 ft ceiling adds about 25% (10 ÷ 8 = 1.25). Very low ceilings below 8 ft are treated as 8 ft.

Insulation

Poor insulation leaks heat, so it adds 10% (×1.10). Good insulation keeps heat out and trims 10% (×0.90). Average insulation is left at ×1.00.

Sun exposure

A room with strong afternoon sun needs 10% more (×1.10). A shaded, north-facing room needs 10% less (×0.90). Average exposure is ×1.00.

People and rooms

Each person beyond the first two adds about 600 BTU of body heat. A kitchen adds a flat 4,000 BTU for appliances. These are added before the multipliers above are applied.
